In my view entertainment is about pleasing your audience as much as possible, not just pleasing yourself.
While we all have our favourite styles of music and particular songs (and things we don’t much like), when performing for an audience an entertainer must always keep in mind that the audience’s tastes and needs are paramount and trump anything that the performer may prefer to do. It follows that when responding to a client for a potential performance I will always seek out their preferences and the style(s) they want (and do not want) for their specific event. This might include slow or fast music, or a mix of both, romantic songs, inspirational songs, rock ‘n’ roll, semi-classical, country etc. The focus must always be on what the audience wants to hear at their event.
Having said that, a performer must always be able to read his/her audience as the event progresses and be highly sensitive to what is happening as the event progresses. We should never just plough on through our predetermined repertoire if it is clear that people have had enough of a particular style. At various times they may, for example, want to dance, stop dancing and rest, eat their meal in peace, listen intently or not listen at all. So a performer must learn to swallow his/her ego and respond accordingly. It is their event not yours !
Nevertheless, a performer must like what he/she is doing and feel that the performance is as good as it can be, at all times. When the performer is enjoying what is happening, almost invariably the fun and enjoyment become infectious and the audience pick up on the mood and have a great time. This has to be the ultimate aim.
